The NEXT MOVE is named for Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt's daughter of Bull Lea, who was somewhat overshadowed at the age of two, by her illustrious stablemate, Bed O' Roses. Next Move more than came into her own the following year, in 1950, and was named champion three-year-old filly. She captured eight stakes that year, including such prestigious events as the Coaching Club American Oaks, the Ladies Handicap, and the Beldame, in which she convincingly bested Bed O' Roses. One of her foals in later years was the stakes winner Good Move.

The NEXT MOVE was restricted to three-year-old fillies at one mile in 1975; run at a mile and three sixteenths from 1984 through 1994, inclusive.
