The VAGRANCY Handicap was named for the fine mare owned by the Belair Stud and trained by Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons. In 1942, she was voted champion three year old filly and also the champion handicap mare. Her victories included the Pimlico Oaks, Coaching Club American Oaks, Delaware Oaks, Gazelle, Test, Alabama (by DQ of Bonnet Ann), Beldame (dead heat with Brancos), Ladies Handicap and Queen Isabella Handicap.
The VAGRANCY Handicap was run at Aqueduct from 1948 to 1955, in 1960, from 1963 to 1967, in 1975, and from 1977 to 1986. Not run from 1949 to 1951. Run at a mile and a sixteenth in 1948 and 1952. Run at seven furlongs from 1953 to 1997. The distance was changed to six-and-a-half furlongs in 1998. Run in two divisions in 1955. In 1999, Hurricane Bertie finished first, but was disqualified and placed second; consequently, Gold Princess was placed first.
