The LEXINGTON Handicap was inaugurated by the New York Racing Association in 1961 as a turf stakes handicap. The race is named for the racehorse and stallion who headed the American sire list from 1861 through 1874. Lexington, foaled in the Kentucky city of that name in 1850, was known as the "Hero of Woodburn".

The LEXINGTON Handicap was designated for three-year-olds and up in 1961. Run at a mile and five furlongs in 1961; at one mile on the main course in 1962; at one and one eighth miles in 1976; at a mile and three-sixteenths from 1971 to 1974; at a mile and a sixteenth from 1963 to 1970, and in 1977 and 1978. Run at a mile and a half in 1975 and from 1979 to 2005.

Not run from 1965 to 1968. Run at Aqueduct prior to 1977. Run in two divisions in 1970, from 1974 to 1976, and in 1982. In 1980, Proctor finished first but was disqualified and placed second. Run as a handicap prior to 1981. Dew Line finished first in the second division in 1982, but was disqualified and placed fifth. Icy Atlantic finished first in 2004, but was disqualified and placed second.
