The NEW YORK TURF WRITERS ASSOCIATION was founded in 1923.
Distance of about 2 miles in 1960 and 1961; about 2 1/2 miles from 1964 to 1970; about 2 5/8 miles in 1971. Run at Aqueduct in 1961 and from 1963 to 1967; at Belmont Park from 1968 to 1971. Run over hurdles prior to 1975. First run in 1938. Not run in 1944, nor from 1972 to 1974. In 1985, the New York Turf Writers Cup Handicap was run at the distance of two miles on the turf as a flat event. Flatterer, who won the race over the hurdles in 1984, came back to finish third, and was beaten by five and three quarter lengths behind Bobby Burns and Dance Caller.
