The SPINAWAY, first run in 1881, is one of the premier events of the racing season for juvenile fillies. Winners of the SPINAWAY include such champions as Maskette (1908), Top Flight (1931), Affectionately (1962), Numbered Account (1971), and Ruffian (1974).
The SPINAWAY was run at Belmont Park in 1943, 1944, and over the Widener Course in 1945. Not run from 1892 to 1900, nor in 1911 and 1912. Run at five furlongs prior to 1901; at five and a half furlongs from 1901 to 1922; at six furlongs from 1922 to 1993. Distance changed to seven furlongs in 1994. In 1959, Natalma finished first, but was disqualified and placed third. In 1992, Sky Beauty finished first but was disqualified and placed third.
