This race, as is the case with several other stakes listed by the NYRA, is named for a district in the area, holding, or neighboring region of the tracks of the association. In this instance, QUEENS COUNTY is the political sub division in which Aqueduct Racetrack and part of Belmont Park is located. Queens County was named in honor of Catherine of Braganza, the wife of King Charles II of England. Queens is the largest of the five boroughs of New York City, with respect to area. In addition to being the site of the 1964 World’s Fair, it is currently the site of John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Shea Stadium (home of the New York Mets), Queens College, and the main campus of St. John’s University.
The QUEENS COUNTY was run at Belmont Park in 1946; at Jamaica from 1956 to 1958. Not run in 1909, 1911, 1912, and
1913. Run at a mile and seventy yards prior to 1904; at a mile and a sixteenth from 1940 to 1958, and in 1993; at one mile from 1904 to 1939, and from 1959 to 1963; at a mile and an eighth from 1963 to 1971.
