Huntley Williams of Queens, N.Y. won The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) third "Grand Mondays" promotion, which rewards one lucky fan with a $1,000 win wager on a horse of his or her choosing in that day's eighth race, but failed to cash in when his choice came in fourth.
Williams, 42, works as a steam tunnel feeder is originally from Jamaica. When posed with the $1,000 decision, the longtime racetracker elected to place his win voucher on Prohibition (No. 10), a speed-figure standout in Monday's feature race.
After breaking in mid-pack from the far outside, the 6-5 favorite settled into a comfortable rhythm early tracking the pace in fourth. Down the backstretch, jockey Stewart Elliot gave his mount a little more rein, allowing Prohibition to draw even with the leaders before reaching the far turn. Once in the stretch, the 4-year-old son of Lawyer Ron battled on gamely, but tired to finish fourth, beaten two lengths
The next Grand Mondays winner will be drawn on February 17.
