Four Roses Thoroughbreds’ Silver Wagon gave up a lot of ground early, but made it up with one, big run under jockey Javier Castellano to score a 1 ¼-length victory in the 107th running of the Grade 1, $300,000 Carter Handicap for three-year-olds and up at seven furlongs.

 

Sent off as the second choice behind previously undefeated California invader Les Grand Trois, Bill Place came late to post a neck victory over Hobbitontherocks in the 47th running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Bay Shore for three-year-olds at seven furlongs.

 

Magna Graduate, a 5-year-old Honor Grades horse, patiently rated for jockey John Velazquez and went on to a 3 ¾-length victory in the nine-furlong Grade 3, $209,100 Excelsior Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Aqueduct.

 

Nobiz Like Shobiz got down to business, scoring a half-length victory over longshot Sightseeing in the 83rd running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Wood Memorial and punching his ticket to the 133rd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

 

Dogwood Stable’s Cotton Blossom, a steady fighter who kept just missing, collared Dream Rush in the stretch and won the 77th running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Acorn for three-year-old fillies by a length.

 

Centennial Farm’s Corinthian carried Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux to a three-quarter-length victory in Belmont Park’s Memorial Day feature, the 114th running of the Grade 1, $600,000 Metropolitan Handicap, before a crowd of 14,901.

 

Glencrest Farm’s favored Honey Ryder, set up beautifully by Safari Queen, rallied by her entrymate to record her first victory of 2007 – a one-length victory in the 49th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Sheepshead Bay Handicap for fillies and mares at 11 furlongs on the firm inner turf course.

 

Starlight Stables and Donald Lucarelli’s Octave, ridden by John Velazquez, swept to the lead at the top of the stretch and held off Lady Joanne for a half-length win in the $237,500 Grade 1 Mother Goose for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.

 

Trainer Allen Jerkens added to his already impressive Hall of Fame resume as Political Force triumphed by 1 ¼-lengths over Fairbanks in the $400,000 Grade 1 Suburban Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at Belmont Park.

 

Co-highweight at 123 pounds Teuflesberg rallied from a stumbling start and a slew of traffic trouble to win the 23rd running of the Grade 2, $247,166 Woody Stephens by two lengths over Most Distinguished.

 

Teammate with Cornelio Velasquez aboard outdueled favored Sugar Shake to win the Grade 2, $150,000 Shuvee at Belmont Park. It was the fifth Shuvee victory for Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens.

 

At the ripe old age of eight, Better Talk Now, silenced all doubters as jockey Ramon Dominguez guided the gelded son of Talkin Man along the inside and prevailed in a three-way photo finish over English Channel and Shakis in the 106th running of the Grade 1, $400,000 Manhattan Handicap.

 

Rags to Riches became the third filly in history and the first since Belmont Park opened in 1905 to win the longest and oldest leg of the Triple Crown when she got a head in front of favored Preakness winner Curlin and won the 139th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes – the 1 ½-mile “Test of the Champion.”

 

Dream Rush clearly established herself as the nation’s top three-year-old filly sprinter as she led at every call and powered her way to a two-length victory over fast-closing Boca Grande in the 82nd running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Darley Test.

 

Shadwell Stable’s Shakis turned back to a mile and an eighth and rode the hedge home to set a Mellon Course record in 1:45.33, winning the 49th running of the Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga Race Course on Travers Day.

 

Locked into a stretch duel with the talented First Defence, who actually grabbed the lead at one point, Hard Spun came back under jockey Mario Pino to win the 23rd running of the $250,000 King’s Bishop for three-year-olds at seven furlongs.

 

Hall of Fame trainer Robert Frankel's Ginger Punch came through with her first Grade 1 victory, romping to a six-length victory in the 54th running of the $250,000 Go for Wand Handicap for fillies and mares at nine furlongs.

 

Before a crowd of 33,906, jockey Calvin Borel punched English-bred Grand Couturier through a gaping hole on the fence and pulled off a three-length, 15-1 upset of favored English Channel in the 33rd running of the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational – the meet’s biggest turf race.

 

Funny Cide, the first New York-bred to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, who captured the hearts and imagination of millions worldwide in his pursuit of the 2003 Triple Crown, celebrated his retirement party of a lifetime on Friday, August 10, at Saratoga Race Course.

 

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott got an early birthday present for the third straight year at Saratoga Race Course when My Typhoon prevailed in the Grade 1, $520,000 Diana. it also gave the 5-year-old daughter of Giant’s Causeway an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Monmouth Park.

 

Street Sense was the 10th horse in history to win the Kentucky Derby and Travers, the eighth horse of 14 since 1960 to use the Jim Dandy as a prep for the Travers and win both races and the ninth horse to win the Travers after being the two-year-old champion.

Barreling into the lead midway on the far turn, Midnight Lute, the massive son of Real Quiet ran off to a 2 ½-length victory over Benny the Bull in 28th running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Forego Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

 

Lawyer Ron, who already dazzled Saratoga Race Course’s fans with his track-record performance in the Grade 1 Whitney, helped himself to another classic, as he sprinted away from seven rivals to easily win the 54th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Woodward by eight and a quarter lengths.

 

Arindel Farm’s Wait a While and her jockey, Garrett Gomez took off for a 2 ¼-length victory in the 19th running of the Grade 2, $200,000 Ballston Spa Handicap.

 

The beauty of Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet has always been that it attracts top horses from all over the world. Doctor Dino, a well-traveled, 5-year-old, French-bred son of Muhtahir, put in a relentless stretch drive under jockey Olivier Peslier’s right-handed stick and collared front-running Sunriver in the final strides to score a head victory in the 49th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Man o’War for three year olds and up at 11 furlongs on the Widener Turf Course.

 

Under a heady ride by jockey Eibar Coa, West Point Stable’s Lear’s Princess out fought the “Belle of Belmont,” Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches, for a half-length victory in the 112th running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Gazelle for three-year-old fillies at nine furlongs.

 

Jockey Eibar Coa took Tale of Ekati on a rail ride home to defeat 4-5 favorite Kodiak Kowboy by a length in the 118th running of the Grade 2, $250,000 Futurity for two-year-olds at seven furlongs.

 

The 3-year-old Distorted Humor colt, Any Given Saturday overtook ambitious pacesetter Tasteyville in the lane and cruised on to a 2 ½-length victory in the 119th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Brooklyn Handicap at nine furlongs.

 

The Leopard, making his turf debut, set a comfortable pace and then came home strong to win the 29th running of the $81,000 Pilgrim for two-year-olds at a mile and a sixteenth on Belmont Park’s Widener (outer) turf course.

 

Shadwell Stable’s Lahudood got through on the rail in midstretch to overtake front-running Rosinka and give jockey Alan Garcia his first Grade 1 victory in the 30th running of the $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational for fillies and mares at a mile and a quarter on Belmont Park’s firm inner turf course.

 

Under a confident ride from jockey Ramon Dominguez, Fabulous Strike earned a berth in the Grade 1, $2 million TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Monmouth Park, pulling clear to a 5 ¾ length victory in the Grade 1, $400,000 Vosburgh Stakes.

 

Jockey John Velazquez kept English Channel on the rail, and when a small hole opened, he muscled the 5-year-old Smart Strike horse to the lead and out-fought Stream of Gold for a 2 ¼-length victory in the Grade 1, $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational.

 

Indian Blessing gave her trainer Bob Baffert a top contender for the $2 million Grey Goose Vodka Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies when she ran off to an easy 4 ½-length victory in the 60th running of the Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette for two-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.

 

Robert V. LaPenta’s War Pass decided to end all discussion as to who was the `now’ two-year-old by running powerful, uncontested fractions and then holding off a late run by Pyro to win Thoroughbred racing’s oldest juvenile stakes, the 136th running of the one-mile, Grade 1, $400,000 Champagne by a length and a half. It was the fifth Champagne victory for Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito.

 

Curlin, the Preakness winner and Belmont Stakes runner-up, made his debut against older horses before 19,338 fans in the 89th running of the Grade 1, $765,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational and knocked out the toughest kid on the block, running down Lawyer Ron in the final strides for a neck victory in this mile and a quarter fall classic.

 

Albert Fried Jr.’s Giant Moon fought off heavy favorite Big Truck through the lane and withstood a late assault by Coastal Drive to win the 14th running of the $100,000 Sleepy Hollow for two-year-old New Yor-breds at a mile by a head.

 

Dr. V’s Magic, dismissed by the New York Showcase Day crowd at 15-1, rallied off the turn and held off WhoWhat Win for a half-length victory over Who What Win in the 32nd running of the $250,000 Empire Classic for New York-breds at nine furlongs.

 

Control System scored a minor upset over 4-5 favorite Oprah Winney in the $81,700 Garland of Roses, as she outsprinted five fillies in mares in the six-furlong dash.

 

Shadwell Stable’s Daaher, making the seventh start of his career, got loose on the lead at Aqueduct and repelled the advance of heavily favored Midnight Lute for a 2 ½-length victory in the 18th running of the $300,000 Hill `N’ Dale Cigar Mile – New York’s final Grade 1 race of 2007.

 

In his 63rd lifetime start, Evening Attire, the graying son of Black Tie Affair rallied through the stretch to nip Barcola at the wire, adding the 102nd edition of the Grade 3, $106,900 Queens County Handicap to his lengthy resume.
