The COMELY was named after the filly who won the first running of the Fall Highweight Handicap in 1914. This was quite an accomplishment, as COMELY was only a 2-year-old running against older horses. In 1960, the conditions of the COMELY were changed to the present conditions for 3-year-old fillies.
The COMELY was run at Jamaica 1945-51 and 1959; at Empire City 1952-1953; and at Belmont Park in 1976, 1981, 1984-85. Not run 1954-58. Run at 1 1/16 miles, for 3-year-old fillies, 1945-53; at five furlongs, and 2-year-old fillies, in 1959. Run in two divisions in 1953, 1963, and 1970. Run at seven furlongs 1960-90. Run at 1 1/16 miles in 1993.
