Cat Cay was bred in Kentucky by the Phipps Stable and campaigned by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey for Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps. The family of Cat Cay had been owned by the Phippses for generations, having purchased her fifth dam, Big Hurry, in the 1940s. Cat Cay was one of many graded stakes winners from the family, which included the great Easy Goer, a full brother to Cat Cay's dam, Cadillacing. Among Cat Cay's graded stakes wins was the G2 Top Flight Handicap at Aqueduct, the home of her namesake race.
