The RUTHLESS is named after the filly who won the first edition of the Belmont Stakes in 1867. Named to Thoroughbred racing's Hall of Fame in 1975, Ruthless was bred and raced by Francis Morris, grandfather of the late John A. Morris. From late July of 1866 through mid?August of 1867, Ruthless raced seven times without defeat, with five of the victories coming in stakes events. She also won the 1867 running of the Travers, this country's oldest stakes race. Ruthless was a New York-bred, having been foaled at her breeder's farm, then in Westchester County, now the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx.

Run at a mile and an eighth in 1974, 1975, and from 1979 through 1988; at a mile and a sixteenth in 1977 and 1978; and at one mile in 1976. Not run from 1989 to 1992.
