Calumet Farm's WHIRLAWAY, trained by Ben Jones and ridden by Eddie Arcaro, became the fifth Triple Crown winner in 1941. He was also Horse of the Year in 1941 and 1942, as well as handicap horse of the year in 1942. In 60 starts he owned a record of 32-15-9, with earnings of $561,161. WHIRLAWAY was one of the most popular horses of this century for two reasons other than his ability. One was his very long tail (he was nicknamed "Mr. Longtail"), the other was his thrilling come from behind style. As a five year old the colorful chestnut made only two starts, pulling up lame in his second effort. As such, owner Warren Wright decided to retire him. He was a successful stud until he succumbed to an intestinal virus and died on April 7, 1953.
