The Stewards' Corner
Welcome to the Stewards’ Corner, where you will find explanations of the decisions that our stewards make on race days. Directly following any decision they make having to do with the official order of finish, including inquiries and objections, the stewards – one appointed by The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), one appointed by the New York State Gaming Commission, and one appointed by The Jockey Club (TJC) – provide an explanation of what happened and the reason for their decision. Race Decisions - January 18, 2013
RACE 6: In the vicinity of the 3/8 pole, # 3 Convocation (R. Dominguez) clips the heels of # 2 Sovereign Default (I. Ortiz, Jr.) and falls. # 8 Talented Whiz (C. Velasquez) checks hard to avoid the fallen horse; the rider loses his irons and the horse is eased in the stretch. # 6 Straight Fax (P. Morales) jumps over the fallen horse and is also eased. # 3 gets up and is walked off the course.
The incident with # 3 clipping heels was not the fault of any other horses. No further action was warranted and the race was declared official as is.
