The Stewards' Corner

Welcome to the Stewards’ Corner, where you will find explanations of the decisions that our stewards make on race days. Directly following any decision they make having to do with the official order of finish, including inquiries and objections, the stewards – one appointed by The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), one appointed by the New York State Gaming Commission, and one appointed by The Jockey Club (TJC) – provide an explanation of what happened and the reason for their decision. Click on the links below to read those explanations.

Race Decisions - February 25, 2012

RACE 2:Jockey’s Objection:  J. Espinoza, the rider of the third place finisher # 6 Big Budget, lodged an objection against the winner, # 3 Summer Sunset (L. Perez) for alleged interference in the stretch.   J. Espinoza also claimed that his horse was struck in the face by the whip of # 3.

# 6 on the rail does steady as # 3 passes in the vicinity of the 1/16 pole, with # 1 Festive Spirit (C. Velasquez) in close on the far outside.

In the judgment of the stewards, the incident, including the possible striking with the whip, did not alter the final placing of the race.

The race was declared official as is.

RACE 3: Steward’s Inquiry and a Jockey’s Objection involving the stretch run nearing the wire.

P. Fragoso, the rider of the third place finisher # 4 Luckysdream, lodged an objection against the winner, # 5 Capital Goods (I. Ortiz, Jr.) for alleged interference in deep stretch.

Approaching the wire, # 4 does check sharply on the heels of # 5, however, # 4 drifts out slightly contributing to the incident.

In the judgment of the stewards, the incident did not alter the final placing and the race was declared official as is.

RACE 8: Jockeys’ objection into the stretch runs of the 8th race. The # 2 Power King (I Ortiz Jr ) alleges that the # 7 Beau de Beaupre ( J Rodriguez ) shuts him off in deep stretch making him check and causting him a placing . After reviewing the video and in the opinion of the Stewards, the incident did not alter the outcome of the race and is declared official as is.
