Dennis Narlinger’s Ready for Fortune got help from favored Sherine’s speed duel with Armonk and an assist from entrymate True Intentions on Sunday afternoon to win the 14th running of the $82,775 Dearly Precious for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs at Aqueduct’s fast inner track by a neck.

Sherine, the 7-5 choice of 3,499 in attendance, outraced Armonk to the lead early, but couldn’t shake her rival as they sparred through fractions of :22.86; :46.26 and :58.53.. At the quarter-pole, Sherine began to labor and backed up while Armonk dug in for the drive.

Enter True Intentions, who had sat a stalking third, to entertain Armonk, as Ready for Fortune, who was bumped at the start, rallied from last under jockey Mario Pino for the win in 1:11.31. She paid $6.60.

Armonk hung in for the place, and True Intentions, making her second career start, was third.

“I’ve trained for Dennis and Michael Narlinger for a while,” said trainer Gary Contessa, who will likely run both fillies back in the Grade 2, $100,000-added Cicada for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs here on Saturday, March 15. “They sent me Frisk Her and I Promise, a couple of stakes horses. Then, they sent me these two fillies and when I watched them train, I said ` Wow! I’ve got two great fillies here.’ Great owners make great trainers. I can’t thank them enough for sending me these horses. They thought these horses would be competitive in stakes here. These two fillies were a great fit. True Intentions was working unbelievably good, but she just came up a little bit short. She’ll be a whole lot tighter next time.

“I thought the winner would be on the lead, but when she broke, the horse inside of her came out right and took her about five or six paths out. She ended up last -- but, you know what? Sometimes, the best things are not what you planned.”

For Pino, a Maryland legend who has long been among the nation’s winningest jockeys, the victory should help bolster business. Pino has moved his tack to New York.

“She’s a nice little filly,” he said. “It was just a matter of getting her out. As soon as I asked her, she was there. I appreciate Gary (Contessa) putting me on her. I’m pretty excited about being in New York.”

Mikeslittlegirl was fourth, followed by Miss Red Delicious and the favored Sherine.

Sumptuous was scratched.
