Jockey Ramon Dominguez rode three winners at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday afternoon to set the Big A’s single-season inner track victory record. Dominguez, a 32-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela, who did not race on Friday because of stomach flu, came back Saturday to ride Oedipus O’Neal ($6.30) to victory in the fourth race. It was his 106th win of the season, breaking the previous record of 105 set by Eibar Coa in the winter of 2005-‘06. “It’s been great,” said Dominguez, who now holds a 108-72 lead over Alan Garcia in the Aqueduct jockey standings. “You can’t take anything for granted. Coming into the meet, I thought I would have a good meet and I thought I had the pieces to be leading rider. At the same time, that doesn’t have to happen. To start the season, breaking a record wasn’t even on my mind. I’m happy to win for Gary (Contessa, trainer) and Winning Move Stable [with Oedipus O’Neal]. They give me a lot of my business. But I have to thank all of the horsemen and my agent, Steve Rushing.” Dominguez then scored with Hot Wheels Joe (($6.30) in the fifth race and capped his day with Watboo ($3.10) in the 10th and final race of the afternoon. While Dominguez was booting home short-priced horses, consecutive bombs – McLovin ($22.60), First Commandment ($29.80) and Prince of Peace ($48.60) – in the seventh, eighth and ninth races, respectively, accounted for a Pick 6 Carryover of $236,310.10 for Wednesday, March 19. First race post on Wednesday is 1 p.m. Aqueduct will be closed for both live racing and simulcasting on Palm Sunday, March 16. The Big A will be open on St. Patrick’s Day, Monday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 18 for simulcasting only. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. |
