With trainer Linda Rice standing a few feet away, Winston Ellis, winner of The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) second "Grand Mondays" promotion, watched Abra cruise home to victory under apprentice jockey Taylor Rice as the 2-5 favorite in the eighth race. Abra's victory was worth $1,450 to Ellis, who had received a $1,000 win bet on a horse of his choice in the race.
Ellis, now retired and living in Brooklyn, is originally from Jamaica, having immigrated to the U.S. in 2003. A fan of horse racing since the age of 13 and a frequenter of Aqueduct Racetrack, Ellis did not waver when selecting which horse to bet.
"I like the Taylor Rice horse," said Ellis resolutely, referring to Abra. "I like the jockey, the trainer, the speed. [Abra] has it all."
Following the race, a smiling Linda Rice congratulated Ellis shortly after the horses crossed the wire, and jockey Taylor Rice posed for a picture with the bettor and his winning ticket, completing a successful day at the track for the retiree.
Grand Mondays, which rewards one lucky bettor with a $1,000 win bet, will be back again next Monday, February 3.
