Baby J came off the rail and rallied through the final yards to post a three-quarter-length victory over Bridgehampton in an upset of Saturday’s 11th running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.
Pressured through an opening quarter-mile in 22.14 seconds by Bridgehampton, Baby J and jockey Joel Rosario relinquished the lead to that rival as the half went in 45.13. After running second along the inside through most of the stretch, Rosario angled the J Be K filly to the outside and she surged into the lead with a rousing late kick that carried her under the wire in 1:10.84 for six furlongs.
“In my head, I thought maybe she would come back, and I kept her busy and rode her,” said Rosario of the Paul Pompa, Jr. color bearer. “Today, after the horse came over a little on me, I put her on the outside and she came back again. It was impressive.”
Sent off at 10-1, Baby J returned $23 for a $2 win bet as she picked up her second victory of the year and first in a stakes. Overall, she is 3-1-2 from seven starts, including a second-place finish to Kauai Katie in last year’s Grade 2 Matron and a third behind So Many Ways and Can’t Explain in the Grade 3 Schuylerville at Saratoga Race Course.
Trainer Pat Reynolds said the Grade 1, $500,000 Test on August 24 at Saratoga would be under consideration for Baby J’s next start.
“She’s very game,” said Reynolds of Baby J, who began 2013 by winning an optional claimer on May 8 and next finished third facing older horses on June 14. “She’s a free-running type of filly, and it worked out. We’re going to kick around [the Test]. She’ll probably need a little time off, but she’ll be tough on a speed track up there wherever we elect to go with her.”
Bridgehampton, who was making just the third start of her career, was 2 ¼ lengths ahead of favored Fusaichiswonderful. Completing the order of finish were Teen Pauline and I’m Mom’s Favorite. Kauai Katie, part of an entry with Teen Pauline, Native One and Lighthouse Bay were scratched.
