Forbes' Firsters

 

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

 

FORBES’ FIRSTERS FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 2

RACE 2, TWO-YEAR-OLD FILLIES, FIVE FURLONGS, DIRT, 1:22 P.M.

 

MR HALL’S OPUS (2yo bay filly, Officer—Sala de Oro, by Expelled) is the third foal to race of her dam, who has produced one winner to date, Truth and Justice, victorious in the Sorority at Monmouth Park, Presque Isle Debutante, and My Trust Cat at Delta Downs as a 2-year-old. Truth and Justice debuted a 3 ½ length winner at Monmouth in May of her freshman season. Sala de Oro also found black type success as a juvenile, taking Emerald Downs’ Barbara Shinpoch, and is a half-sister to multiple stakes winners No Turbulence and Hall of Gold, with the former having finished third in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel.

ANDELE (2yo bay filly, Bernardini—Getaway Girl, by Silver Deputy) is a granddaughter of stakes winner Baby Zip, who was named Broodmare of the Year for 2005 after producing 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper and 2000 Grade 1 Hopeful hero City Zip. Getaway Girl, who won three races at Great Lakes Downs as a 3-year-old, has one winner from four fouls, Grade 3 British Columbia Derby winner Northern Causeway.

FULLY LIVING (2yo bay filly, Unbridled’s Song—Half A. P., by Pulpit) is the second foal and first to race out of her dam, who was third in a Keeneland maiden special weight for 2-year-olds in her lone career start. Half A. P. is a half-sister to Halfbridled, named Champion Two-Year-Old filly for 2003 after winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, Grade 2 Oak Leaf, and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

CAN’T EXPLAIN (2yo chestnut filly, Not For Love—I Ain’t P T, by A.P. Indy), out of an unplaced mare, is a full-sister to Together Indy, winner of the 2010 Grade 2 Commonwealth at Keeneland. Their second dam, I Ain’t Bluffing, earned Grade 1 wins in the Milady Handicap and La Brea and produced Acting Happy, victorious in the 2010 Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan and third in that year’s Grade 1 TVG Coaching Club American Oaks and Grade 1 Alabama.

RUBY LIPS (2yo chestnut filly, Hard Spun—Its a Ruby, by Rubiano) is a half-sister to three runners with black type who raced primarily or exclusively at Woodbine. Like a Gem was a winner on dirt at 2 and 3 before going on to win Woodbine stakes on dirt and Polytrack at 4. Another, Win and Reign, won a juvenile race for Ontario-breds on Polytrack. Cool Gator, while not a stakes winner, was third in the Grade 3 Grey for 2-year-olds and the Grade 3 Skip Away for older horses. Their dam is a half-sister to three stakes winners, including Grade 1 Young America winner Firery Ensign.

FORM FITTING (2yo gray/roan filly, Tapit—Fashion Girl, by Tactical Cat) is the third foal out of his dam, who captured Monmouth Park’s Colleen Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. One of her foals, Like a Dream, has won three claiming races, while The Bear Vow, who remains a maiden, was runner-up in Woodbine’s Colin Stakes for 2-year-olds in his second start. Fashion Girl, a daughter of Grade 2 winner Ransomed Captive, is a half-sister to Shepherd’s Field, who took the Grade 2 Norfolk for juveniles.

Misty Rosette is out of restricted stakes winner Exclusive Rosette, and is a full-sister to Grade 2 Lazaro Barrera victor Storm Wolf.

SWEET N DISCREET (2yo chestnut filly, Discreet Cat—West Side Dancer, by Gone West) has two siblings of racing age, both black-type earners. Discreet Dancer, a full-brother, debuted a 9 ¾-length winner late in his 2-year-old season and was third in this year’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. Travelin Man, a half-brother, won last year’s Grade 2 Swale and this year’s Sir Shackleton.
