Forbes' Firsters

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

THREE HEARTS (2yo bay filly, Hat Trick—Secret Heart, by Fort Wood) is a half-sister to Pluck, who won the 2010 Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Their dam, Secret Heart, won a stakes and placed in three Group 1 events in South Africa. Secret Heart is a half-sister to South African Group 1 winners Promisefrommyheart, who was named that country’s Co-Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, and Covenant.

APPLE CIDER (2yo chestnut filly, More Than Ready—Who Did It and Run, by Polish Numbers) is out of a mare who on the Monmouth Park turf won the Grade 3 Reeve Schley, Jr. after defeating males in the Grade 2 Jersey Derby. Who Did It and Run has produced two black-type earners: Who’s Cozy, who was third in the Grade 3 Lake George on turf, and American Victory, who won a restricted stakes on dirt at Pimlico. Apple Cider brought the highest price of 40 yearlings by More Than Ready to sell at auction last year.

RADIANT CUT (2yo dark bay or brown filly, Sharp Humor—Ruff, by Clever Trick) is a half-sister to Mr. Gruff, who so far in his career has twice won the Grade 3 San Simeon going down the hill at Santa Anita and was third in the 2010 Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile. Ruff was also a stakes winner on turf, having taken the Grade 3 Miss Grillo as a juvenile.

PRISCILLA MARIE (2yo bay filly, Bustin Stones—Hay Jude, by Wavering Monarch) is a half-sister to Little Mike, who has won three graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic in his most recent start. Little Mike is entered in Saturday’s Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Betfair Hollywood Park. Another half-brother, Little Nick, has won three stakes to date, including the Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, and placed in the Grade 3 Miami Mile.
