Big Apple Babies

Big Apple Babies is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Big Apple Babies will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

RACE 1, ALL TWO-YEAR-OLDS, 1 1/16 MILES, TURF, 12:50 P.M.

 

YANNICK (2yo chestnut colt, Showing Up—Kschessinka, by Nureyev) is a half-brother to Martita Sangrita, who has won two turf stakes to date, including Penn National’s listed Red Carpet Stakes in July. Kschessinka’s only other foal of racing age, Cocodimama, has won a single race, a maiden claimer on turf at Delaware Park. A maiden winner in England, Kschessinka is a half-sister to Grand Lioness, who has won a pair of stakes on dirt, and Doppio, who was second in the Grade 3 San Simeon Handicap on grass.

SAVED THE BEST (2yo bay colt, After Market—La Dolce Vita, by Quiet American) is out of a turf runner who won three stakes, including the Grade 3 Suwannee River Handicap. Her only other foal of racing age, Champagne Dynasty, was winless in four starts.

LONG RIVER (2yo chestnut colt, A.P. Indy—Round Pond, by Awesome Again) is the first foal out of his dam, who won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Other notable wins for Round Pond include the Grade 1 Acorn and Grade 2 Fantasy. Darley purchased Round Pond, a half-sister to stakes-placed Drama Lady, for $5.75 million as a broodmare prospect.

HAPPY FELLA (2yo chestnut colt, Northern Afleet—Song of Love, by Changeintheweather) is the first foal of his dam, a winning half-sister to Nobiz Like Showbiz, who as a juvenile won the Grade 2 Remsen and as a sophomore took the Grade 1 Wood Memorial. He later added wins in three graded stakes on turf. Hello Broadway, another half-brother to Song of Love, placed in a pair of graded stakes.
