Forbes' Firsters

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

KID LIGHTNING (chestnut colt, Lemon Drop Kid—Heat Lightning, by Summer Squall) is a half-brother to Stevie Wonderboy, named Champion Two-Year-Old Male after winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Del Mar Futurity, and Theyskens’ Theory, who was a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed in England before finishing second in the Grade 1 Garden City at Belmont Park. Nine of 10 foals out of Heat Lightning to race have won, six on turf. Kid Lightning’s second dam, Mystical Mood, won the Grade 3 Schuylerville and was second in the Grade 1 Frizette as a 2-year-old. She later produced Fair Judgment, who won group stakes in England and Ireland.

LOOKLISTENANDLEARN (bay colt, Elusive Quality—Brocatelle, by Green Desert) is a half-brother to Fusaichi Hokutosei, who placed in stakes in Japan, and Ahlaain, who placed in stakes in England and the United Arab Emirates. Their dam, Brocatelle, was placed in France and is out of Group 1 Prix de la Foret winner Brocade. As a broodmare, Brocade produced European Horse of the Year Barathea, who landed scores in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile; English highweight 3-year-old filly Gossamer, victorious in the Group 1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile and Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas; Zabar, who won four Group 3 races in France and Germany; and Free at Last, a listed stakes winner in England who later won a Grade 3 and placed in a pair of Grade 1s on the turf.

NAVY GUARD (chestnut colt, Unbridled’s Song—Fleet Lady, by Avenue of Flags) is a full-brother to Midshipman, awarded Champion Two-Year-Old Male honors after winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on synthetic surfaces, and a half to Grade 2 Cotillion heroine Fast Cookie, who won stakes on dirt and turf. Their dam was effective sprinting and routing, winning stakes at distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. Her biggest wins came in routes, the Grade 2 La Cañada (1 1/8 miles) and the Grade 2 El Encino (1 1/16 miles). She was winless in three starts on grass.

EFFICIENT MARKET (gray/roan colt, Tapit—Salty Response, by Cozzene) is the first foal out of his dam, who won a listed stakes going long on dirt at Monmouth Park and also had victories on turf and synthetic. Salty Response is a half-sister to Salty Strike, who won the Grade 3 Dogwood on dirt.
