Big Apple Babies

Big Apple Babies is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Big Apple Babies will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

LEXI MORGAN (dark bay or brown filly, Arch—Strike the Sky, by Smart Strike) is full-sister to Lauren Byrd, who was second in the Jessamine on the turf as a 2-year-old, and a full-sister to Hudson Steele, who has won six turf stakes, including the Grade 2 Dixie. All five foals out of Strike the Sky to race have won, three on the dirt.

PENWITH (bay filly, Bernardini—Composure, by Touch Gold) is out of a mare who won the Grade 2 Oak Leaf and was second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet as a 2-year-old before going on to win the Grade 1 Las Virgenes and Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks at 3. Composure, a full-sister to Grade 3 West Virginia Derby winner Ready Set, has produced Grade 1 stakes-placed runners Tranquil Manner (third in the Woodward) and Centring (third in the Ogden Phipps Handicap and Personal Ensign Invitational Handicap). Tranquil Manner and Centring are by A.P. Indy, the sire of Bernardini. Four of Composure’s seven starters have won.

EUPHROSYNE (bay filly, Harlan’s Holiday—Three Graces, by Doneraile Court) is the first foal out of her dam, who won a minor turf stakes at one mile on the turf at Canterbury Park. Three Graces is a half-sister to seven-time stakes winning sprinter Private Horde, whose biggest victory came in the Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap.

PRINCESS TUMI (bay filly, Flatter—Are You Kidding, by Demaloot Demashoot) is a half-sister to Whatsitgonnatake, who won a stakes at Prairie Meadows as a 2-year-old (dirt) and a restricted stakes at Indiana Downs as a 3-year-old (turf), and Hurry Home Warren, who captured the Harry Henson Stakes, a turf sprint, at Hollywood Park as a sophomore. All six foals out of Are You Kidding to race have won.
