Forbes' Firsters

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

 

FORBES’ FIRSTERS FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 9

SWEET SHIRLEY MAE (2yo dark bay or brown filly, Broken Vow—Joyful Chaos, by Rahy) is out a mare who on turf won a restricted stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack and was second in a minor stakes at Belmont Park. Joyful Chaos has produced two other foals of racing age, including one winner, Chaotic Cat, who in March won a maiden special weight and an allowance on dirt at Mountaineer. Joyful Chaos is a half-sister to turf horse Sal the Barber, whose three stakes wins include a score in the Grade 3 Calder Derby.

HERTHUM (2yo chestnut colt, Strong Contender—Cat Alert, by Tabasco Cat) is out of a turf mare who was second in the Grade 3 Matchmaker at Monmouth Park. She has produced two winners from as many foals of racing age. Cat Alert is out of Grade 3 Fleur de Lis Handicap winner and Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks runner-up Gold N Delicious, making her a half-sister to Fair Grounds stakes winner Precious Kiss.

BERN IDENTITY (2yo bay colt, Bernstein—Maddalena, by Good and Tough) will attempt to become the second winner from four foals to race out his dam, who took the Grade 3 Old Hat and was second in the Grade 1 Prioress. Maddalena has a black-type earner to her credit as Agresivo, a half-brother to Bern Identity, was second in a stakes on turf in Turkey in his lone known start to date.
