The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), hosted 29 members of the mainstream media yesterday at its first-ever Spring Media Day. Attendees included producers, writers and on-air talent from such outlets as CNN, CBS, WPIX, Newsday and El Diario.
Guests were greeted with gift bags and a buffet lunch in the Turf & Field room where they heard presentations from NYRA’s Director of Communications & Media Relations Eric Wing, Racing Analyst Richard Migliore, Handicapper and Morning Line Maker Eric Donovan, Chaplain Humberto Chavez and Placing Judge Sonny Taylor. Attendees also took part in an autograph session with former jockeys Migliore, Angel Cordero Jr. and Jorge Velasquez, and they watched the day’s 5th race from the winner’s circle.
“The idea was to provide a fun, yet fairly comprehensive introduction to Belmont Park and the New York horse racing industry,” said Eric Wing, Director of Communications & Media Relations for NYRA. “The two comments we heard most were ‘I had no idea that Belmont was so nice’ and ‘I can’t believe I never made it here before today.’ It was a nice opportunity to show off our facility—and some of the people who make it special—to mainstream media who may have just needed that one little nudge to come out and see what thoroughbred racing is all about. We definitely plan to host additional media days in the future.”
