On-Track Business Brisk on Opening Day of Belmont Park Fall Meeting

Buoyed by the debut of a new, 15 percent-takeout Pick 5 wager with a 50-cent minimum, on-track handle and attendance totals for Saturday's opening day of the Belmont Park Fall Meeting easily exceeded those of the 2012 Fall opener.
On-track handle on Belmont races totaled $1,740,269, up 13 percent from $1,540,601 last year.
Attendance today was 6,549, a 42 percent gain from 4,598 in 2012.
All-sources handle, which includes wagers on Belmont Park races both on-track and from simulcast outlets nationwide, was $10,376,183, a decline of 4 percent from $10,776,794 on opening day last year.
The inaugural Pick 5, which returned $195.00 for a correct 50-cent ticket, handled $238,514. The wager covered races 1-5 and was comprised of winners returning $7.40, $7.10, $2.90, $5.80 and $5.60 for a $2 win ticket.
Today's $300,000 Guaranteed Late Pick 4 wager handled $504,884, up 28 percent over last year's total of $392,273.
