The BELMONT Stakes, the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown, is named after August Belmont who had been a leading banker and racing man of the 19th century. He was also the first president of the Jockey Club in 1867. In 1869, August Belmont took first and second money with his own Fenian and Glenelg.
The BELMONT Stakes was run at Jerome Park 1867-89; at Morris Park 1890-1904; and at Aqueduct 1963-67. Not run 1911-12. Run at 1 5/8 miles 1867-73; 1 ¼ miles 1890-95, and 1904-05; 1 1/8 miles 1893-94; 1 3/8 miles 1896-1903 and 1906-25. No time taken 1907-08. Run as a Handicap Stakes in 1895 and in 1913. The value for the 1987, 1988 and 1992 winners includes the $1 million Triple Crown point system bonus.
Secretariat established a world record for 1 ½ miles on the dirt in his 31-length victory in 1973. With his win in the Belmont, he became the ninth horse to capture the Triple Crown.
Thirty-one horses have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and 19 have started in the Belmont to attempt to sweep the Triple Crown. Eleven have succeeded and 19 have faltered. In seven recent runnings, horses that won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness (Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998, Charismatic in 1999, War Emblem in 2002, Funny Cide in 2003, Smarty Jones in 2004, and Big Brown in 2008) were denied racing immortality in the Belmont Stakes. In 2012, I’ll Have Another won the Derby and Preakness but was scratched and retired the day before the race. Racing has not seen a Triple Crown champion since 1978, when Affirmed swept the three-race series.
A crowd of 120,139, the largest in New York racing history, attended the 2004 running, hoping to see Smarty Jones become Racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner. Birdstone won; Smarty Jones finished second.
Funny Cide, a New York-bred, finished third in his 2003 Triple Crown attempt. Empire Maker won.
In 2007, Rags to Riches lived up to her breeding and out-gamed favored Curlin by a head to become the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 102 years and only the third Belmont Stakes winning filly.
James Rowe is the leading Belmont Stakes trainer with eight wins. Woody Stephens holds the record for consecutive winners with five (Conquistador Cielo, 1982; Caveat, 1983; Swale, 1984; Creme Fraiche, 1985; Danzig Connection, 1986).
Among jockeys, James McLaughlin and Eddie Arcaro are tied with six wins. McLaughlin is the only rider to win three consecutive Belmont Stakes twice. He won with Forester (1882), George Kinney (1883), Panique (1884), then started another streak with Inspector B. (1886), Hanover (1887), and Sir Dixon (1888). Laffit Pincay won three consecutive Belmonts with Conquistador Cielo (1982), Caveat (1983), and Swale (1984).
