The MOHAWK is named for the Indian tribe that once occupied the valley of the Mohawk River in the northwest part of New York State.
Run at Belmont Park in 1980-1991, 1993-95, and 1997-present; at Saratoga in 1992; and at Aqueduct in 1996. Not run in 1979. Was restricted to 2-year-old fillies 1978-93 and contested at six furlongs, barring 1989 when it was 5 ½ furlongs. Run at 1 1/16 miles 1994-97 and at 1 1/8 miles 1998-present.
In 1998, there was a dead heat for win between Plato’s Love and Pebo’s Guy.
