The SHEEPSHEAD BAY Handicap was named after the old Brooklyn Racetrack that operated 1880-1910. Sheepshead Bay was closed down when the Hughes Ban eliminated all racing in New York in 1911 and 1912 and was never reopened.

The SHEEPSHEAD BAY Handicap was run at Jamaica in 1959 at 1 1/16 miles. Run at Aqueduct 1960-74 and in 1976. Run at 1 1/8 miles in 1960-61 and 1976; and at 1 1/16 miles on the turf 1963-64. Run at one mile on the main track in 1962. Run at 1 3/16 miles from 1965-74, and on the main track in 1974. Open to both sexes prior to 1962. Run in two divisions in 1968, 1970, 1972, 1976 and 1982. Run at 1 ¼ miles in 1975 and 1977-1979. Run on the main track in 1990.
