It’s hard to believe that Mike Smith’s first Belmont Stakes victory was preceded by his induction into the Hall of Fame, a Kentucky Derby win, a Preakness Stakes triumph, and even wins in the Queen’s Plate and Irish 2000 Guineas. The horse that gave him his first win in the Test of the Champions win was Drosselmeyer in 2010. Owned by WinStar Farm, Drosselmeyer – named for the character who plays Clara’s godfather in “The Nutcracker” – was also the first winner of a Triple Crown race trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott.
