Stewards Corner

Welcome to the Stewards’ Corner, where you will find explanations of the decisions that our stewards make on race days. Directly following any decision they make having to do with the official order of finish, including inquiries and objections, the stewards – one appointed by The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), one appointed by the New York State Gaming Commission, and one appointed by The Jockey Club (TJC) – provide an explanation of what happened and the reason for their decision. Click on the links below to read those explanations.

Race Decisions - October 8, 2011

RACE 1: Steward’s Inquiry into the start.  Shortly after the start, # 1 Starforaday (C. Velasquez) appears to clip a heel of # 3 Boys At Tosconova (J. Velazquez) and bobbles, almost unseating the rider.  At the start, Starforaday breaks slightly slow.  # 2 Sun Dance Moon (R. Maragh) shifts out as a result, and # 4 Tapizar (C. Nakatani) and # 3 shift in filling the void left by # 2 for those first few strides.   Starforaday finishes fourth. In the judgment of the stewards no change in the order of finish was warranted, due to the slow break by Starforaday and the resultant actions by adjacent horses.  The race was declared Official as is.

4035.2. Foul riding penalized.

(b) A horse crossing another may be disqualified, if in the judgment of the stewards, it interferes with, impedes or intimidates another horse, or the foul altered the finish of the race, regardless of whether the foul was accidental, willful, or the result of careless riding. The stewards may also take into consideration mitigating factors, such as whether the impeded horse was partly at fault or the crossing was wholly caused by the fault of some other horse or jockey.

RACE 3: Steward’s inquiry and jockeys objection on the # 2 from the # 11 into the stretch run. The # 2 Perfect Drive ( C Velasquez ) makes an aggressive move out from the rail approaching the 1/16 pole, making contact with the 11 Dance Floor Maniac ( D Cohen ) forcing him into the # 8 Zip Quik ( R Curatolo ). In the judgment of the Stewards both horses were impeded. After reviewing the video the # 2 was disqualified from 2nd and placed 4th behind the 11.

4035.2. Foul riding penalized.

(a) When clear, a horse may be taken to any part of the course provided that crossing or weaving in front of contenders may constitute interference or intimidation for which the offender may be disciplined.
(c) If a horse or jockey jostles another horse, the aggressor may be disqualified, unless the impeding horse or his jockey was partly in fault or the jostle was wholly caused by the fault of some other horse or jockey.
