Welcome to the Stewards’ Corner, where you will find explanations of the decisions that our stewards make on race days. Directly following any decision they make having to do with the official order of finish, including inquiries and objections, the stewards – one appointed by The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), one appointed by the New York State Gaming Commission, and one appointed by The Jockey Club (TJC) – provide an explanation of what happened and the reason for their decision. Race Decisions - May 26, 2012
RACE 1: Jockeys objection from the rider of the 2nd place horse # 2 Joya Real (J. Castellano) for alleged interference leaving the gate against the 1st place horse # 1 A McCoughtry (I. Ortiz Jr.). # 1 makes contact with #2 leaving the gate and in the judgment of the stewards the incident didn’t alter the finish of the race.
RACE 8: Steward’s Inquiry into the start:
# 1 Mystical Star (J. Lezcano) rears and breaks through the starting gate doors prior to the other doors opening, thus causing her own problem.
# 2 Magical Cat (IRE) (J. Velazquez) reacted to the actions of # 1 and was held in the gate by the assistant starter. # 2 was subsequently pulled up after leaving the gate and did not finish.
# 2’s chances were compromised at the start and was declared a Non-starter, with all wagers refunded.
# 1 was disqualified and placed last, having opened the starting gate doors and left the gate early.
