Jockey Eibar Coa brought home Martin L. Cherry’s Pickapocket in Sunday afternoon’s 28th running of the $85,925 Pilgrim for two-year-olds at nine furlongs on the yielding inner turf course, giving him a sweep of the two Closing Day Stakes at Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet. Coa earlier in the day rode Chestoria to victory in the Miss Grillo and Meredith Bee in the seventh race ($9.60). Before 4,848 fans, he surged through the lane aboard Pickapocket, a Florida-bred Mecke colt trained by Frank Alexander, for a 1 ½-length victory in 1:52.62 in the Pilgrim. Coa then won the 10th and final race of the afternoon aboard Flying Sappho ($7.10) for his fourth winner of the afternoon and his 38th of the meet. That tied him with Edgar Prado as the leading jockey of Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet. “I love this horse,” Coa said after the Pilgrim. “I told Frank (Alexander) that he really surprised me with the professional way he did it. He broke fine, sat in behind the speed. I just waited until I decided it was time to make a move. He just took off when I asked him.” Said Alexander: “I told Eibar just to get him into the position to win, and ride him like he’s the best horse He’s getting a lot better. He was a little green in his first start. “I might back off him a little bit now. The Laurel Futurity ($125,000, mile and a sixteenth, turf, November 25) is in a month, but I don’t know if I want to do that. I may just wait and run in the Tropical Park Derby (Grade 3, $100,000, nine furlongs, 3yo, January 1, 2007). ” Pickapocket returned $16.80 to win. Strike a Deal was second, followed by Giatn Chieftan and C R’s Deputy in fourth. Todd Pletcher was the leading trainer of the Fall Championship Meet with 15 winners, followed by Bill Mott and Bruce Levine with 13 each, and Bobby Frankel, Richard Violette Jr. and Gary Contessa with 12 each. Racing resumes on Wednesday with Opening Day of Aqueduct’s 45-day Fall Meet. First-race post is 12:30 pm. Eastern. |
