Cornelio Velasquez rode four winners Sunday afternoon at Belmont Park to tie Javier Castellano at the top of the jockey standings with eight wins each through the first seven days of the fall meet.
Velasquez kicked off his streak in race 1, a first-level allowance for New York-breds, when he piloted Beautyinthepulpit ($11.20) to a 1 ½-length victory. The rider next visited the winner’s circle in race 5 aboard By M K ($11), who prevailed in a stretch duel and drew clear to win by 3 ½ lengths. In race 7, Velasquez again emerged victorious from a duel when Green Monster ($12.20) bested a determined Ruffino by a half-length. To bookend the day, Velasquez scored in the nightcap, a maiden claiming event, aboard Hoopskirt ($8).
A 42-year-old native of Panama, Velasquez is the second-leading rider on the NYRA circuit so far this year with 153 victories from 875 mounts. Ramon Dominguez leads the standings with 231 victories through the conclusion of racing on Sunday.
