My Miss Aurelia

My Miss Aurelia won the first 2-year-old race of the 2011 Saratoga Race Course in fine fashion, showing ample early speed and gaining the advantage late to debut a one-length winner on Friday.
Quickest out of the gate, My Miss Aurelia yielded the top spot and pressed Delightful Magic through fractions of 22.02 and 45.02 and edged past the pacesetter in the final 70 yards under jockey Julien Leparoux.
“She’s a quality filly,” said trainer Steve Asmussen, who trains the filly for Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. “We had high hopes for her going over there, and I thought she ran really well. We’re pleased with how she came out of the race, and obviously we’re hoping she’s a top-class filly. This was a very nice first step.”
The next step could involve a start in either the Grade 2 Adirondack on August 14 or the Grade 1 Spinaway on September 4.
“We’re hoping she’s a stakes caliber-filly, and we’re expecting her to be one,” said Asmussen. “The day after [a race] is a bit early, but we hope she shows up in a stake [later in the meet].”
My Miss Aurelia was purchased for $550,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, making her the most expensive filly by Smart Strike from her crop to sell at public auction last year. Out of Grade 3 Desert Stormer winner My Miss Storm Cat, My Miss Aurelia is a half-sister to Albergatti, who was second in this year’s Northern Spur at Oaklawn after breaking his maiden impressively at Santa Anita in his second start.
Horses previously featured in the New York Watch series include 2010 Champion Two-Year-Old Uncle Mo; Boys At Tosconova, victorious in the Grade 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful; More Than Real, who annexed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf; Breeders’ Futurity hero J. B.’s Thunder; To Honor and Serve, who swept the Nashua and Remsen; and multiple graded-stakes winner Winter Memories. Other graded stakes winners on the New York Watch list are Eightyfiveinafifty, Position Limit, and Royal Delta.
