When Jerkens was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1975 at age 45, he was then the youngest trainer to be so honored. By that point Jerkens had already cemented his reputation as “The Giant Killer,” upsetting Kelso three times in 1962 and ‘63 with Beau Purple and Secretariat twice in 1973 in the Whitney Handicap with Onion and the Woodward Handicap with Prove Out; 1973 was the same year Jerkens was honored with the Eclipse award for Top Trainer. In 1992 Jerkens campaigned stakes winners November Snow, Devil His Due, Sky Beauty, Missy’s Mirage, Belong to Me and Miss Iron Smoke. Sky Beauty would go on to win New York’s Triple Tiara for fillies the following year and the Eclipse award as Top Older Female the year after that. |
