McGaughey's extensive resume includes training the undefeated filly Personal Ensign, as well as champions Easy Goer, Heavenly Prize, Inside Information, Queena, Rhythm, Smuggler, Storm Flag Flying and Vandlandingham, won an unprecedented five graded stakes races at Belmont Park in one day --- October 16, 1993 – with Miner’s mark (Jockey Club Gold Cup); Kelso (Lure); Frizette (Heavenly Prize); the Beldame (Dispute) and the Lawrence Realization (Strolling Along).

Career Highlights:

  • 2004: Inducted into the Hall of Fame.
  • 1995: Won two Breeders’ Cup races at Belmont Park; My Flag (Juvenile Fillies) and Inside Information (Distaff).
  • 1993: Won an unprecedented five stakes races at Belmont Park on Oct. 16, 1993: Jockey Club Gold Cup (Miner’s Mark); Kelso (Lure); Frizette (Heavenly Prize); Beldame (Dispute); and Lawrence Realization (Strolling Along).
  • 1993: Honored by the New York Turf Writers Association with the Outstanding Trainer Award. Also honored with the C.V. Whitney Achievement Award.
  • 1992 - 1993: Won consecutive Breeders’ Cup Miles with Lure in 1992 and 1993.
  • 1989: Won two Breeders’ Cup races with Dancing Spree (Sprint) and Rhythm (Juvenile).
  • 1988: Won Eclipse Award as Top Trainer. Honored by the New York Turf Writers Association with the Outstanding Trainer Award.
  • 1988: Won 15 Grade 1 stakes - 13 of them in New York - to tie D. Wayne Lukas for the most Grade 1 victories in the nation.
  • 1986 - 1988: Personal Ensign was undefeated (13 for 13) during her career. She was the first major horse to do so in 80 years.
