Turner Jr. is the legendary trainer of the 1977 Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew. Only one horse (Affirmed in 1978) has since accomplished this feat.

Career Highlights:

  • 2000: The great turf filly Gaviola won three major New York graded stakes, the Garden City, the Lake Placid, and the Sands Point.
  • 1995: Was awarded the Maryland Racing Writers’ Achievement Award
  • 1977: Trained Seattle Slew to win the prestigious Triple Crown, sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont. Turner Jr. received the Outstanding Trainer Award, presented by the New York Turf Writers Association.
  • 1966: After riding as a steeplechase jockey for five years, Turner Jr. started his own stable.
