Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

HAVANA (gray/roan colt, Dunkirk—Missy Turtle, by Kyle’s Our Man) is a half-sister to Among the Willows, who placed in a route stakes at Northlands Park. Miss Turtle, who has produced three winners from five starters, is a winning half-sister to stakes-winning sprinters Chief J Strongbow, who took a listed stakes at Laurel Park, and Egg Head, who captured a listed stakes at Delaware Park before finishing second to Lost in the Fog in the Grade 2 Riva Ridge. Havan’s second dam, Redding Ridge, won three sprint stakes.

CHOMSKY (chestnut colt, Distorted Humor—Meerkat Miss, by Giant’s Causeway) is the first foal out of his unraced dam, a half-sister to European Champion Two-Year-Old Male Hold That Tiger, who won the Group 1 Grand Criterium on the turf in France and was third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on the dirt. Hold That Tiger is by Storm Cat, the sire of Giant’s Causeway. Meerkat Miss is also a half-sister to Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner Editor’s Note and stakes winners Catnip and Catfriend. Chomsky’s second dam, Beware of the Cat, was a stakes winner and was Grade 2-placed.

KOWBOY KING (bay colt, Kodiak Kowboy—Kivi, by King of Kings) is a half-brother to Regally Ready, who has won the Grade 1 Nearctic and Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. All three foals out of Kivi to race have won. Kivi is a stakes-placed half-sister to restricted turf stakes victor Legend of Russia and is a daughter of Vilikaia, who captured a Group 3 in France and was second in the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

MISCHIEVIOUSLY (bay colt, Indian Charlie—Illicit, by Mr. Prospector) is a half-brother to Gone Astray, who took the Grade 2 Ohio Derby and Grade 3 Salvatore Mile, and Contentious, who was Group 3-placed in Germany. Their dam is an unraced half-sister to Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Smuggler and a daughter of Champion Older Female/Hall of Famer Inside Information.

KENDALL’S BOY (bay colt, Sky Mesa—Golden Damsel, by Gold Token) is out of a mare who won the Bouwerie for New York-breds and was second in the Grade 3 Affectionately Handicap. Golden Damsel has produced two winners from as many foals to start, including two-time stakes-placed turfer Instant Style.
