Forbes' Firsters

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

KIMONO (2yo bay filly, Bernardini—Runnin Ute, by Gone West) is out of a mare who was a winner at 2 and placed in a sprint stakes at the Solano County Fair at 3. As a broodmare, she has produced two winners from three foals to race: One In Ten, whose lone win came in a maiden claiming race at Assiniboia Downs, and Pistol Pit, who won races in Serbia at the ages of 2 and 3. Kimono is the second most expensive of five 2-year-olds by her sire to sell at public auction in 2012.

LIBERTY GIRL (2yo bay filly, A. P. Warrior—Champagne Glow, by Saratoga Six) is a half-sister to 2011 Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice and 2010 Grade 1 Acorn and Grade 1 Test heroine Champagne d’Oro. Their dam won a minor stakes at Philadelphia Park and was second in the Grade 1 Frizette as a juvenile. Champagne Glow is a half-sister to Jurado, who was named Champion Miler in Italy after winning the Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua, and Grand Canyon, who was victorious in the Grade 1 Norfolk and Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity as a juvenile. Champagne Glow has produced nine winners from 10 foals to race.

OSCAR PARTY (2yo bay filly, Dixie Union—Dream Lady, by Old Trieste) is out of a turf runner who won the Omnibus at Monmouth Park and placed in the Grade 3 Lake George at Saratoga and Grade 3 Athenia Handicap at Belmont Park. Her one other foal of racing age, Major Gain, won the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity on an artificial surface and was third in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club on dirt at Churchill Downs as a 2-year-old.

KAUAI KATIE (2yo bay filly, Malibu Moon—More Than Pretty, by More Than Ready) is out of a mare who was runner up in the restricted N.A.T.C. Futurity at Monmouth Park and a listed stakes at Mountaineer as a 2-year-old before going on to win a listed event at Churchill Downs at 3. Ingrid the Gambler, a half-sister to More Than Pretty, was a listed winner on turf at Santa Anita. Kauai Katie has one winner from two other foals of racing age, with Winding Way having debuted a 4 ¾-length winner on July 10 at Betfair Hollywood Park. Kauai Katie is the second most expensive of 14 juveniles by her sire to sell at public auction in 2012.

LENDEROFLASTRESORT (2yo bay filly, Yes It’s True—Pashmina, by Pentelicus) is a half-sister to five-time stakes-winning sprinter Pashito the Che. Bling, another half-brother to Lenderoflastresort, placed in three stakes in Alberta.

DISTORTION (2yo chestnut filly, Distorted Humor—Misty Rosette, by Stormin Fever) is the second foal out of his dam, who was victorious in the Grade 3 Old Hat and third in the Grade 1 Test. Misty Rosette is out of restricted stakes winner Exclusive Rosette and is a full-sister to Grade 2 Lazaro Barrera victor Storm Wolf.

RUBY LIPS (2yo chestnut filly, Hard Spun—Its a Ruby, by Rubiano) is a half-sister to three runners with black type who raced primarily or exclusively at Woodbine. Like a Gem was a winner on dirt at 2 and 3 before going on to win Woodbine stakes on turf and Polytrack at 4. Another, Win and Reign, won a juvenile race for Ontario-breds on Polytrack. Cool Gator, while not a stakes winner, was third in the Grade 3 Grey for 2-year-olds and the Grade 3 Skip Away for older horses. Their dam is a half-sister to three stakes winners, including Grade 1 Young America winner Firery Ensign.

GARMENTOS GIRL (2yo dark bay/brown filly, Indian Charlie—Misgoldy, by Miswaki) looks to become the second winner from three foals to race out of her winning dam, a half-sister to Grade 1 Woodward and Grade 1 Donn Handicap winner Formal Gold. One half-sister to Misgoldy, Maple Lake, won a restricted stakes at Woodbine, while another, In the Storm, produced Grade 3 Mr. Prospector victor Noonmark.
