Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

STRONG MANDATE (bay colt, Tiznow—Clear Mandate, by Deputy Minister) is out of mare who posted Grade 1 wins in the Spinster, John A. Morris, and the Shuvee Handicap. Clear Mandate broke her maiden in her second start, which came in November of her 2-year-old season. Eight of her nine foals to race have won, including Newfoundland, who captured the Grade 3 Canadian Turf Handicap (off the turf) and was second in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and Grade 1 Suburban Handicap, and listed stakes winner Full Mandate.

CLOSET E (bay colt, Street Sense—Amandatude, by Aptitude) is the third foal and first to race out of his dam, a router who won a minor stakes at Delaware Park and was second in the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks and Grade 2 Fitz Dixon Cotillion. Closet E’s second dam won five stakes for Ohio-breds and also produced Grade 3-placed Maid of Heaven.

CELLO (bay filly, English Channel—Indy Pick, by A.P. Indy) is a full-sister to Optimizer, who on the turf has won the Grade 3 Kent, Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap, and Grade 3. Col. E. R. Bradley Handicap and has finished second in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap. Indy Pick has produced one other winner, Humdinger, from three foals to race. Indy Pick won two races, both on the dirt, and is a half-sister to Grade 1 Matron and Grade 1 Acorn heroine Finder’s Fee.

SUPER SKY (chestnut filly, Sky Mesa—Tortuga Lady, by Thunder Gulch) is a half-sister to Dyna’s Lassie, who won the Miss Liberty at Monmouth Park and placed in three graded stakes on the turf, and Princess Arabella, who took the Sunland Oaks on the dirt. All six foals to race of their dam have won. Tortuga Lady is a winning full-sister to Grade 1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Invisible Ink and a half-sister to two-time stakes placed Inner Circle.
