Forbes' Firsters

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

INDIZ (2yo gray/roan filly, A.P. Indy—Zaftig, by Gone West) is the first foal out of his dam, who won the Grade 1 Acorn and was third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Indiz’s granddam, Zoftig, captured the Grade 1 Selene and has also produced this year’s Acorn heroine Zo Impressive.

BEAT THE DRUMS (2yo bay filly, Smart Strike—Storm Flag Flying, by Storm Cat) is the second named foal out of his dam, awarded Eclipse honors for Champion Two-Year-Old Filly after earning Grade 1 wins in the Matron, Frizette, and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. At 4, Storm Flag Flying annexed the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, a race named for her Hall of Fame grandmother. Storm Flag Flying, a half-sister to minor stakes winner With Flying Colors, is out of My Flag, who also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in addition to three other Grade 1 races and was third against males in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes. Personal Ensign also produced Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Miner’s Mark and Grade 1 Oaklawn Handicap victor Traditionally. Colors Flying, a half-brother to Beat the Drums, won a single race in seven starts.

DERBY EVE (2yo bay filly, Tiznow—Sweet Damsel, by Turkoman) is a full-sister to Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and Grade 1 Travers winner Colonel John and Grade 1-placed Mr. Hot Stuff. Caroline’s Gold, a half-sister, was Grade 3-placed. Seven of eight of Derby Eve’s siblings have won.

ATLANTIC DREAM (2yo bay filly, Stormy Atlantic—Frosty Promise, by Frosty the Snowman) is a full-sister to Icy Atlantic, who won three graded stakes on turf, including the Grade 2 Arcadia Handicap. Another full-sibling, Wild Promises, captured the Grade 3 My Charmer and the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf. Frosty Promise has produced three winners from six foals to race, with Atlantic Win, also a full-sibling to Atlantic Dream, having won three times on dirt.

GUSTAVIA (2yo chestnut filly, Pulpit—Summer Rainbow, by Summer Squall) is a half-sister to Hard Mystery, who took Belmont Park’s Inside Information overnight stakes on dirt earlier this year. Their dam won exclusively on dirt and captured a minor route stakes at Delaware Park as a 4-year-old.

PSYCHADELACIZED (2yo bay filly, Distorted Humor—Taegu, by Halo) is a half-sister to Grade 2 Schuylerville and Grade 3 Debutante victress Classic Elegance. Their dam won one race, which was on grass, and is a half-sister to turf stakes winners Yukon Robbery and Chorwon.
