Forbes' Firsters

Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Forbes’ Firsters will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

SIGN (2yo bay filly, Pulpit—Cross, by Mighty) is out of a mare who won a restricted stakes on turf via disqualification as a 2-year-old. A half-brother to Cross, Lattice, won the Grade 2 American Derby on turf. Cross has one other foal of racing age, Thwart, who won a maiden claimer in May at Evangeline Downs.

APOLOGIZE (2yo chestnut filly, Lemon Drop Kid—Aurelia, by Danzig) is out of a placed half-sister to seven black-type earners, including Grade 1 Go for Wand Handicap winner Aldiza and Grade 2 Molly Pitcher victress Atelier. Apologize’s second dam, Aishah, won the Grade 2 Perfume and is a half-sister to Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Althea.

MARCELLINA D’ORO (2yo bay filly, Medaglia d’Oro—Philly’s Philly, by A.P. Indy) is out of an unplaced half-sister to Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap and Grade 2 True North Handicap winner Woke Up Dreamin and four-time Grade/Group 3 winning turf mare Denomination. Philly’s Philly’s two other foals of racing age have won at the claiming level.

JET AWAY (2yo dark bay, filly, Mr. Greeley—Resort, by Pleasant Colony) is a half-sister to Grade 2 Peter Pan winner and Grade 1 Wood Memorial runner-up Sightseeing. Three of Resort’s four foals to race have won. Resort, who was second in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and third in the Grade 1 Gazelle, is a half-sister to Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap hero Living Vicariously and Grade 3-winning sprinter With Distinction.
