Forbes’ Firsters is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. RAU BREK (chestnut filly, Mr. Greeley—Tawaaded, by Nashwan) is a half-sister to two-time Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap hero Shakis, who also placed in two Grade 1 races in the United States and in group stakes in France and the United Arab Emirates. A half-sister to Rau Brek, Sahaat, was stakes placed in France. Rau Brek’s second dam, Thaidah, won a stakes and was group-stakes placed in England and was a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Glorious Song and Devil’s Bag.

SAMURAI’S HONOR (chestnut filly, First Samurai—Trip, by Lord at War) is out of a mare who won three graded stakes, including two editions of the Grade 3 Turfway Breeders’ Cup Stakes. As a broodmare, Trip has produced Passport, who won the Cradle on the dirt at River Downs as a 2-year-old. Samurai’s Honor’s second dam was a listed stakes winner who produced additional stakes winners Laity and Joke, with the latter later becoming the dam of three-time Grade 1-winning sprinter Zensational.

Sales history: $85,000 Keeneland September yearling

 

ILAPA (dark bay/brown filly, Rock Hard Ten—Catinca, by Storm Cat) is out of a mare who won six graded stakes on the dirt ranging in distance from 6 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. Her biggest win came in the Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap at 1 1/16 miles. Catinca has produced three winners from six starters, including Managed Account, who won the Toccet for 2-year-olds at Aqueduct. She has produced no winners on the turf.

MURMURE (chestnut filly, Lemon Drop Kid—Melody Maiden, by Saint Ballado) is a half-sister to Medolina, who won the Tweedside overnight stakes at Belmont Park on the turf. Another half-sister, Skating, was stakes placed on the grass. Their dam finished third in a turf stakes at Mountaineer Racetrack.

SPANGLED BANNER (bay filly, Tiz Wonderful—Eastern Ruckus, by Eastern Echo) is half-sister to Ladyecho, who won the Dearly Precious at Aqueduct and Marshua at Laurel going short and placed in the Grade 2 Cotillion Handicap and Grade 3 Delaware Oaks going long. Another half-sister, Whatdreamsrmadeof, was third in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks. Five of six foals out of Eastern Ruckus, an unraced half-sister to stakes winner Gold Star Deputy, have won, none on turf.

STRIKING STYLE (dark bay or brown filly, Smart Strike—Rahy Dolly, by Rahy) is out of a mare who finished second in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet as a 2-year-old. Rahy Dolly has three winners from four foals to race, including Aquitaine, who finished third in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel on the turf.

GRANNY MC’S KITTEN (bay filly, Kitten’s Joy—Granny Franny, by Grand Slam) is a full-sister to Kitten’s Dumplings, who won the Grade 2 Lake George on Wednesday. Kitten’s Dumplings has also won the Grade 3 Regret and the La Senorita and Edgewood, all on the turf.
