Saratoga 2013 Events



Sunday, July 14
Open House

11 am to 4 pm - Family Fun Activities
3 pm - FREE Concert by Zendaya

It’s family fun for everyone as fans get a free sneak-peek of our anniversary season. This year’s event will feature a free concert with Zendaya, star of the Disney Channel hit series Shake It Up! and finalist on season 16 of Dancing with the Stars. Don’t miss traditional family activities like puppets, carnival games, caricatures, pony rides, bounce inflatables, backstretch tours, picture magnets, face painting, live music and more!  The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the concert beginning at 3 p.m. General admission for the concert (no chairs, pop-ups, blankets, etc) will be available on the track apron on a first-come, first-served basis.

Family Fridays

Fridays are all about families with the return of Family Fridays.Weekly activities include arts & crafts, face painting and a bounce inflatable plus one weekly special attraction. The weekly family-friendly festival will be held each Friday of the meet inside the entrance to the Reserved Seats Office near the Carousel, from noon to 4 p.m.

Sunday, July 21
22nd Annual Hat Contest

The “crowning” achievement of opening weekend - contestants will go head-to-head in the annual Hat Contest for prizes worth hundreds of dollars. This year’s categories are Kreative Kids, Uniquely Saratoga and Fashionably Saratoga.  Contestants are encouraged to commemorate our 150th anniversary with a Victorian flair to their headpieces.  Registration begins at noon under the grandstand.

TasteNY at Saratoga Race Course

TasteNY at Saratoga Race Course, a uniquely NY marketplace, is an all-new attraction for the 2013 meet.  The market will be held each Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Located inside the entrance to the Reserved Seats Box Office near the Carousel, the lively market will feature a variety of vendors and artisans offering products made exclusively in New York State. 





Thursday, July 25 & Thursday, August 15
Times Union Jockey Breakfasts

Meet your favorite jockeys while watching the morning workouts during a trackside breakfast on the Clubhouse porch.  Autographs are free. Commemorative Saratoga 150 books autographed by the jockeys will be available to benefit the Travers Celebration.







Thursday July 25
5th Annual College Day

College students can check out their favorite course at the 5th annual College Day. All college students will receive free grandstand admission with valid college ID and will be invited to register to win a $1,000 scholarship after each race. There will be other great prize giveaways throughout the day.  The first 1,000 college students to register on-track will receive a free commemorative College Day T-shirt.  Fans can also meet Greg T from The Elvis Duran Morning Show.






Saturday, August 3
150th Anniversary of Racing at Saratoga

Join us for the track’s official anniversary party on Whitney Day.  The Cake Boss will provide a specially-designed birthday cake. Get your picture taken with our special Victorian-themed photo booth.  And watch as one lucky fan places the first in a series of five $15,000 win-wagers, courtesy of Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson. Beginning August 3 and continuing each Saturday for the remainder of the meet, one lucky individual each week will have the opportunity to place a $15,000 win-wager on the day’s featured stakes race. Sunday, August 4
Equine Retirement Day

Saratoga will pay homage to the only New York-bred to win the Kentucky Derby. The day will include a meet and greet in the paddock with Funny Cide while Funny Cide’s jockeys, Jose Santos and Richard Migliore, will sign autographs to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Four NY-based horse retirement organizations will be on track and will accept donations throughout the day.

International Day

A new event for the 2013 meet – International Day will celebrate a variety of cultures with special entertainment, performances, music and activities as well as food and drink for track patrons. As many as 10 cultures will be represented and celebrated on track, with a majority of the festivities taking place inside the entrance to the Reserved Seats Office near the Carousel.





Wednesday, August 14

Fabulous Fillies Day

Enjoy a Girls’ Day Out and support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation at the annual Fabulous Fillies Day. All fans who wear pink will receive free clubhouse and grandstand admission. Activities include a fashion show (1:30 pm), tarot card readings and henna tattoo designs. Ladies can sign up in advance for an on-track art class here. Additionally, 2,000 random ladies and girls will receive a Fab Fillies bag. Don’t miss the stylish fun!





Sizzling Hot Pink Saratoga Hat Luncheon

Reserve your place now for the 11:30am to 2:00pm Wednesday August 14th Sizzling Hot Pink Saratoga Hat Luncheon presented by Escada honoring Marylou Whitney!  Luncheon takes place in the At the Rail Pavilion at Saratoga Race Course, and is $150 per person.   Renowned researcher Dr. Larry Norton is the featured speaker at the luncheon, which is part of NYRA’s Fabulous Fillies Day schedule of events to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.   Please email jadams@nyrainc.com to reserve your place, seating is limited! 

The At the Rail Pavilion will be open from 2:30 to 5:30pm on Wednesday August 14th so you can shop the Escada Boutique and see their 2013 Fall Collection!  A portion of all sales on Wednesday August 14th will be donated by Escada to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Travers 1864 Restaurant Week

A number of restaurants and eateries throughout the greater Capital Region will offer special pricing and menus in celebration of the Travers during the fourth annual “Travers 1864 Restaurant Week.” Click here for a list of participating restaurants.

Stewart's Ice Cream Eating Contest

Racing fans will compete in the ultimate in chilly contests at the annual Stewart’s Ice Cream Eating Contest. Contestants will be divided into three age groups – kids (6-12), teens (13-17) and adults (18+) – as they battle to see who can eat a pint of ice cream the fastest.

Travers Celebration

The only evening affair at Saratoga Race Course will return to celebrate the 144th edition of the Mid-Summer Derby. The official party of the $1 million Travers, the Travers Celebration supports the Backstretch Employee Service Team, the Times Union Hope Fund and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.  Honorary chairs are Mr. George Hearst and Mrs. Sharon Dominguez.  Fans can purchase tickets at www.2013traverscelebration.eventbrite.com





Friday, August 23
Battle of the Brews

Saratoga Race Course will play host to the area’s best brews as adults enjoy the ultimate in beer tasting during the 16th annual Battle of the Brews. All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross Adirondack Saratoga Chapter.  Battle of the Brews will take place inside the entrance to the Reserved Seats Office near the Carousel. Veterans Day

Saratoga Race Course will pay tribute to the nation’s active duty service members and veterans during the annual Veterans Day. The day will feature free grandstand admission for all United States active duty military and veterans with valid military ID. Veterans of World War II will be recognized in the winner’s circle following the day’s second race, named in honor of the Leatherstocking Honor Flight, which transports American veterans to visit national memorials in Washington, D.C. dedicated to honoring their service and sacrifices. 







Friday, August 30
Saratoga 150 - Memories to Last a Lifetime

The Spa will reflect upon the 150th anniversary season with a series of events to launch the final days of the sesquicentennial season. Local youth groups will give racing fans a performance designed to pay homage to the race course’s past while looking ahead to the future. The day will also include a special ceremony to formally load the Saratoga 150 time capsule and a thank you to SPAtacular, the official Saratoga 150 Horse. Fans will also enjoy the debut of a video featuring highlights from the 150th anniversary season, which will be played on the video boards prior to the day’s feature race.

Family Fun Fest

Families will enjoy an afternoon of kid-friendly activities in the backyard at the Family Fun Fest, which benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region. 


Monday, September 2
Enter-to-Win Saratoga 150 Memorabilia & Family Fun Fest

On the final day of the 150th anniversary season, fans will be invited to enter-to-win the opportunity to take home memorabilia from the sesquicentennial that has been on display at Saratoga throughout the meet. Entry forms will be available at the admission gates. Monday also marks the second day of the annual Family Fun Fest, with activities for kids in the backyard.  In addition, the first 10,000 fans can pick up a free Belmont Park fall schedule magnet.
