Named after the capital of New York State, the Albany is the third and final leg of the Big Apple Triple for state-bred 3-year-olds, which includes the Mike Lee at Belmont Park and the Finger Lakes Derby. First run in 1978, the Albany was contested at both Aqueduct and Belmont at varying distances before moving to the Spa in 1986 at its current distance of 1 1/8 miles.
