A turf race for 3-year-olds and up since 1961, the Bernard Baruch originally was contested on the main track and restricted to 3-year-olds in its first two editions in 1959 and 1960. Carded at varying distances through the years, it was shorted from 1 1/8 miles to 1 1/16 miles in 2012. A financier, philanthropist and statesman, Bernard Baruch (1870-1965) was an advisor to presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as a racing fan and thoroughbred owner who campaigned horses under the name Kershaw Stable. In 1927, his horse Happy Argo won the Carter. Three times on the cover of Time Magazine, Baruch continued to advise on international affairs until his death at age 94.
