The Forego, which had its first running at Belmont Park in 1980, is named for Martha Gerry’s three-time Horse of the Year (1974-76), four-time champion older horse (1974-77) and champion sprinter (1974). Trained successively buy Sherrill Ward and Frank Whitely, the big gelding won dozens of stakes races including four editions of the Woodward and two Met Miles. In one of racing’s most thrilling moments, Forego came charging through the stretch under 137 pounds to nip Travers winner Honest Pleasure in the 1976 Marlboro Cup. The Forego, which was run at a mile in its first two editions, was shortened to seven furlongs in 1982.
