From 1987 to 1994, the New York-bred gelding Fourstardave won at least one race at Saratoga yearly, including the 1988 Albany Handicap, the 1989 and 1991 West Point Handicaps, and consecutive runnings of the Daryl’s Joy in 1990 and 1991. Trained by Leo O’Brien and owned by Richard Bomze and Bernard Connaughton, Fourstardave’s success at Saratoga earned him the nickname “The Sultan of Saratoga” and the Daryl’s Joy was renamed in his honor in 1996. The Daryl’s Joy had its first running in 1985 and was run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf until 2012, when it was shortened to a mile on the grass.
