The turf race for fillies and mares was inaugurated in 1989 as the Aqueduct Breeders’ Cup, where it was held until moved to Saratoga in 1994 as the Saratoga Breeders’ Cup. In 1997, it was renamed the Ballston Spa. The race is named for the village located to the southwest of Saratoga Springs. The county seat of Saratoga County, Ballston Spa is named after Rev. Eliphalet Ball, a Congregationalist clergyman and an early settler. Abner Doubleday, who invented baseball, was born in Ballston Spa and James Fenimore Cooper wrote portions of his novel “The Last of the Mohicians” in the present day Brookside Museum.
